Biblical Teachings About Food

Today, there are many churches and religious organizations that forbid people from eating certain food, labeling it as unclean. In a world where such confusion is rampant, we need to know the correct biblical teachings about food. In each age, God gives certain regulations to His children in order to bless them. Those who obey are blessed abundantly, it is however different for those who disobey God’s commandments.

1. Do Not Add or Subtract

In this age too, God gave us certain regulations regarding the kind of food we should eat. Then what if we disobey God? We can never receive God’s blessings.

Deuteronomy 4:2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.

The Bible says that we should not add to nor subtract from God’s commands, but keep God’s commandments as they are. It is the same with regards to food. We need to follow God’s regulations regarding food in each age.

2. Teachings Regarding Food in Each Age

Then what biblical teachings about food did God give in each age? In the garden of Eden, they only ate fruits and vegetables.

Genesis 1:29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

As shown in the verse above, Adam and Eve were told to eat only fruit and vegetables. True obedience would be to eat what God instructed them to eat without adding their own thoughts. What about the time of Noah, what did God tell them to eat?

Genesis 9:3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

Before the flood, the people living in the time of Noah only ate fruits and vegetables. However, after the flood, God instructed that they eat meat as well. This means that from that time on the people had to obey God by eating both vegetables and meat without adding their own insistences. If a man decides not to eat meat because he had eaten only vegetables in the past, that would be considered as disobedience to God’s word.

In the time of Moses too, God gave another regulation regarding food as well.

Leviticus 11:1-3 The Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting. He said, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord, bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.“‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, you are to offer a male without defect. You must present it at the entrance to the tent of meeting so that it will be acceptable to the Lord.

In the time of Moses, the animals were categorised into two groups; clean and unclean animals. Tracing back to the time of Noah, the people of that time could eat all animals, however, in the time of Moses, they were only allowed to eat clean animals. The people in the time of Moses had to obey the words of God by eating only clean animals.

What about in this age then? What food regulations did God give to us?

Acts 15:28-29 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements:  You are to abstain from food to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell.

In our age, we can eat anything except for food sacrificed to idols, blood and the meat of strangled animals. This means that, we can eat the food that was considered unclean in the time of Moses. Adhering to the past age’s regulations is disobedience to God’s commands. Even though we might perceive the food as unclean because of the prior age, we still need to get rid of our own thoughts and rather obey God’s words.

3. God’s Teachings Regarding Food

Even though God taught that we ought not to add nor subtract from the Bible, some people still try to add their own opinions regarding food. Then what does the Bible teach about such people?

1 Timothy 4:1-3 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.

The Bible teaches that those who forbid people from eating certain food are taught by demons. We cannot receive salvation if we obey teachings taught by demons. We should obey God’s words regarding food so that God’s grace will always follow us. When it comes to the words of God, our opinion does not matter. True faith is proven by those who obey the words of God absolutely.
