On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning on the 10th of December 2023, ASEZ WAO planted 20 (twenty) trees at the Green Leaves Primary School, in the informal settlement of Okahandja Park in Windhoek. The event was greeted by forty enthusiastic ASEZ WAO members, who actively participated in planting hope at the local school. This initiative was under the banner of ‘Mother’s Forest’ one of ASEZ WAO’s climate change response activities, aimed at reducing greenhouse gases and, coping with climate change by planting 8 billion trees around the world. Trees not only alleviate the climate crisis by absorbing carbon, the main cause of global warming, but also purify the air and provide oxygen and green space, contributing to the creation of a high-quality urban environment. This is especially important for people living in an informal settlement like Okahandja Park, where many residents are uninformed about climate change. The principal of the school, Mr. Chanville Mackrill emphasized the importance of the ASEZ WAO activities to the global village and said, “What you [ASEZ WAO] are doing is very good…, we need something to counter climate change. You have taken up the responsibility to help the earth and humankind to save ourselves by planting trees. I hope more people can do that..”

The HOD of Maths and Science, Mrs. Sofia Haipinge said, “I think the greatest gift we can give to Mother Earth is trees because that is what brings life. We get food, shelter and so much more from trees. We can combat global warming by planting more trees.” She said this was the motivation for her participation, and she hopes to partake in the ASEZ WAO activities in the future.

Lizaan Titus who was a participant expressed the willingness to share what he has learned with others. “I learned the importance of trees in our community, they help us improve our health, and students at the school can have trees to rest under the scorching heat.”

As a result, ASEZ WAO’s Mother’s Forest initiative not only contributes to combating climate change through tree planting but also enhances the quality of life for both learners and residents. Considering that there are three local schools near Green Leaves Primary School, it will foster responsibility and climate action among the residents of Okahandja Park. The group aims to hold more activities to drive the global village to a more environmentally friendly Namibia.
